Good grief...

About as patriotic as we Aussies get is mumbling along to the song..."We come from a land down-under...."

Well it can't be the Vegemite sandwich... we don't effing own it anymore, along with a lot of other Aussie icons that got sold/bought from under us.  So yeah, the song is about all we got left... though it's probably on a foreign owned label these days.

My view of patriotism... do no harm to others... don't steal; don't cheat; don't lie; don't kill; don't thieve; don't covet thy neighbours wife or commit adultery; don't go out of your way to be a bastard to anyone.

Yup, pretty much the 10 Commandments, but it makes for a stronger society that'll stand shoulder to shoulder in all conditions to support one another.... your contrymen and women.  Sadly, however, at any given moment, right around the World, there are people turning on, killing, maiming and stealing from their own people.. the least patriotic thing anyone could do because it is a betrayal of one's own national identity/culture/upbringing, etc.

JMHO, but if we could tame down the identity/culture/upbringing and focus on the one thing that unites us all -- that we're human beings -- there would be a lot less turning on, killing, maiming and stealing.  It's not a very popular view, though, because we all like feeling that we're special because we belong to a certain group.

I like the quiet patriot. The one who truly lives our ideals without talking about it or hoopla: Hanging flags (not that I don't love ours and not that it's a bad thing to do), and wearing lapel pins are not required. The kind who serves others quietly without seeking recognition, and is a hero without being a bully.

He/she is willing to stand between his/her home and war's desolation, and stand in harm's way to protect and defend....but is not anxious to kill or harm. He/she is a leader and follower...and while holding the law supreme, knows seeking justice is more important, and that it should be seen being done and doesn't confuse it with revenge. He/she walks humbly, secure in his/her love of our land and people and what they stand for each in his/her own special and infinitely precious way.

well said Doc...

You make a fine point here, Karen, and one that more people should/could embrace... that we're all human beings and therefore we should care about one another. However, my view of patriotism, looking out for your countrymen/women, is not one that's confined by national borders.  That should be a given, but it should extend also to other peoples of other nationalities, simply because they are human beings with the same basic needs as everyone else.

Besides, what is nationalism/patriotism these days anyhow??  With globalisation and migration, many countries have multi-cultural populations these days... migrants who integrate well and who are proud to call their new countries home.  There is nothing wrong with being proud of one's national identity or heritage, however, it helps to define us, and there is nothing wrong with belonging to a particular group, providing that group is not exclusive of or detrimental towards others.

There is a thin line between Patriotism and Fanaticism...the most important thing is don't surpass that line

Oh I over-step that line all the time... I'm fanatical when our cricketers meet the Poms to reclaim the Ashes; possessed when our footballers (rugby league) stick it to the Kiwis and the Poms.

But yeah, we have far too many fanaticists and zealots causing havoc in the World... those who are overly consumed with their own self importance and agendas to consider the harm they've done/are doing; the atrocities they commit to further their own cause.

At least when our cricketers/footballers trounce the opposition they'll go and have a friendly beer afterwards.

well said Doc...

thanx, Skinhit.

Most Americans are unable to separate the words American/patriot, believing they are the same thing.

The UK is the opposite. Here, the politically correct do-gooders would have you believe being patriotic = being racist. So we are unable to display our national flag outside our houses/public buildings in case it causes offence.

If it were up to me I'd get together all the committee-forming, tree-hugging, do-gooders and have them shot as traitors.

Yes, Andrew Symonds is the perfect example

I think I'll not say anymore.

Sounds like we're not as opposite as you think

Hehe... fact is, though, he's a Pommy export... was born and bred in England.  Symonds was eligible to play for England, but being a resident here he opted to play for the Aussies instead... though these days I'd say his international cricketing career is over
